Glassblowing

Glassblowing is the art of creating glass structures --- such as bowls, cups, vases, sculptures and other decorative pieces from molten glass. The art form has existed for thousands of years and the process remains virtually the same today. It begins by heating the glass in the furnace. Once the glass is pliable, the artist gathers it on a blowpipe. The molten glass is then manipulated by the artist blowing into the blowpipe, rolling it on a marver and using other techniques to achieve the desired outcome. When the piece is finished, it is removed from the blowpipe and placed in an annealing oven. This special oven prevents cracking by slowing cooling the glass down to room temperature.

Glassblowing is the heart of the GlassRoots' initiative. Our nonprofit is pleased to have a hotshop on site that provides youth the opportunity to experience this art form. We also offer public classes and the studio can be rented by professional glass artists.
