Studio Outreach Programs
GlassRoots is deeply committed to catalyzing full-bodied creative expression and deep learning. One powerful means to deeper impact is long-term partnerships and collaboration. In-school and off-site residencies are offered in a variety of topics, and are customizable for schools. Residencies may include multiple visits over several weeks, or single visits over several weeks; and may include one or more grades.
Students will delve into the world of glassmaking in a survey-style class brought directly to your school!
Our trained artists will deliver world-class, hands-on, art education integrated with STEAM principles to your students in their own space. This program is customizable and can be tailored to your needs.
Intro to Mosaics
Explore Patterns: Ages 8+
Students will create individual mosaic projects while exploring mathematical concepts like sacred geometry, heritage patterns, designing your own patterns, and more! Students will learn about glass cutting tools, including glass clippers, running pliers, and scoring knives. Instructors will discuss the use of geometric patterns in design and color theory.
Explore Nature: Ages 10+
Students will create individual mosaic projects based on themes from nature. Participants will be instructed in creating either realistic portraits of nature or abstract/impressionistic representations, using the direct method of glass mosaic. Students will learn about glass cutting tools, including glass clippers, running pliers, and scoring knives. Instructors will discuss the use of geometric patterns in design and color theory.
Explore Self Portraits: Ages 14+
Students will create individual mosaic projects based on self portraits. They will be instructed in creating either realistic portraits or abstract/impressionistic representations of themselves using the direct method of glass mosaic. Students will learn about glass cutting tools, including glass clippers, running pliers, and scoring knives. Instructors will discuss the use of geometric patterns in design and color theory.
Intro to Stained Glass
Suncatchers: Ages 12+
In this introductory class, students will learn how to design a small suncatcher. Each student will learn to cut sheet glass, and use metal foil and flux to solder the frame to create colorful keepsakes.
Intro to Etching
Students will learn how to physically and chemically transform the surface of the glass using various etching techniques.
The Weight of Words: Age 8+
Using the provided stencils or making their own, students will explore the weight of their words using the etching cream or our portable sandblasting machine and an adhesive-resist process on glass objects.
Exploring Patterns: Ages 10+
Students will create individual mosaic projects while exploring mathematical concepts like sacred geometry, heritage patterns, designing your own patterns, and more! Students will learn about glass cutting tools, including glass clippers, running pliers, and scoring knives. Instructors will discuss the use of geometric patterns in design and color theory.
Image Transfer Processes : 10+
Students will learn to transfer an image or drawing to a glass picture frame, and add collage aspects like journal pages, patterned paper, news clippings, and/or magazine images to create original works of art!
The Body-Positive Workshop
This workshop explores the concept of self-identity and emphasizes that people are like art, coming in different sizes, shapes, shades and forms. Students will learn how to study and draw basic anatomy, reflect on their own identities, and produce works of art.
Memoirs
Using photographs and other collage materials, students will create visual memoirs. This theme will explore personal histories, as well as family and cultural histories.
Resin Course
Upcycling into Art: Ages 8+
Students will explore recycling and upcycling in this fun and user-friendly course. Each participant will work on a blank canvas, and use tumbled and selected glass fragments, mica powder, acrylics, found objects and glitter to create beautiful one-of-a-kind art. Students will also explore the use of color and texture to create stunning works of original art.
