Communications and Development Director
Gayle has fifteen years’ experience building the capacities of nonprofits through her work in business development, grant management, fundraising and marketing. She has helped advance the mission of such nonprofits as the Montclair Art Museum, Studio Montclair, Valley Arts, Arts Unbound and the Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey, a statewide nonprofit that advocates for affordable housing for people with special needs. She also provides art business coaching to emerging and professional artists and has been teaching her popular Business Bootcamp for Artists course.
Gayle is also a professional artist, and has worked in ceramics, metals and enamels, and most recently, in watercolor (www.gaylemahoney.com). Her background in fine craft includes working in sales support at the Smithsonian Craft Show, the Philadelphia Buyers Market and the Architectural Digest Design Show. She has also designed craft products for EK Success (Martha Stewart Craft, Jolie’s Boutique and Michael’s art supply stores).
Gayle studied art, marketing and communications at San Francisco State University, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Art in Society from Skidmore College. As part of her degree program, she conducted field research on the history of the arts in Essex County, with a focus on Montclair. Earlier in her career she worked as a creative director in advertising, creating ad campaigns for Fortune 500 companies including Hewlett-Packard, Johnson & Johnson, Target and Walmart.
