The Glassblowing Apprentice Program is an intensive training program designed for youth, ages 16-22, who want to learn the ancient art of manipulating 2,100-degree molten glass.
Skills taught will include extracting molten glass from the furnace, applying color, using molds, as well as freehand sculpting, and forming the glass into utilitarian objects for sale. Students will also learn the finishing process of grinding and polishing cold glass.
Apprentices will also learn teamwork, problem-solving and product design skills. All projects will emphasize creative business entrepreneurship skills including sales, marketing and fulfillment.
Apprentices will gain all the necessary skills to help GlassRoots create its signature product line. The revenue from this product line subsidizes GlassRoots’ programs for Newark youth.
This apprenticeship may fulfill a school’s service learning or community service requirement, as GlassRoots is a registered 501(c3) organization.
Preference will be given to BIPOC-identifying youth living in Newark. Limited to 8 students per semester.
