A collaborative program between GlassRoots and the Penland School of Crafts
Penland School of Crafts, a renowned craft school in the mountains of North Carolina and GlassRoots OFFER a unique collaboration for students to explore the arts in depth and earn college credits, 84% of program participants enrolled in college upon completion and are working, or have completed, at least a two-year degree. What: (1) Begin with THREE weeks working with GlassRoots staff and artists at our studios in Newark, NJ to prepare for participation in an intensive craft training program! (2) Travel to Penland, NC for an 8-week craft concentration workshop in one of seven media, participate in a Penland work activity on campus, and explore professional development opportunities in the arts. Each student who successfully completes the entire program will receive 9 hours of transferrable college credit, giving students a head start on a college degree! (3) Return to GlassRoots to participate in a one-week post-program review, student art show and graduation celebration! (4) Opt for automatic admission to Essex County College, or transfer credits to another college.

We’ll be with you:
A GlassRoots staff member will be assigned as your mentor. And Penland will assign a staff member to help you with anything that might come up while you’re on their campus!
GlassRoots will offer 3 hours/month of open studio time to each student for one year after you return from Penland.
GlassRoots will commit to 2 additional hours of follow up to support you in pursuit of your goals.
You will also become part of a GlassRoots alumni network.

Ability to travel and be away from home for the 8-week period and participate in the full 13-week program
Agreement to enroll in college for January, 2019,and earn, at a minimum, an associate’s degree
All costs for the program, including tuition, transportation and living expense will be covered.
You will receive a stipend during the program; earning while you learn! You can use this stipend for family or personal household expenses, rent, insurance payments, or other expenses that are on-going and must be met while you are participating in the GlassRoots/Penland program or save it for future college expenses. An additional stipedn will be awared post-program, to cover non-tuition related college expenses.
