Register for a class in Glassblowing, Glass Fusing, Mosaics, or Flameworking!
GlassRoots offers a variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons in glass-art across three studios known as The Flat Shop (for mosaics, glass fusing, kilnforming, glass casting),The Flame Shop (for flameworking - lampworking) and The Hot Shop (glassblowing). All classes are for students ages 10 and up, unless otherwise noted. To register online, click on any class or shop title above.
Please note: Some items made in our Hot and Flat Studios may require additional cooling time, and/or finishing in our Cold Shop, and may not be available to take home the same day. In general, items will be available for pick-up 48 hours after the class has concluded. We will ship items upon request for an additional fee.
KILNFORMING 1: COASTER OR SUNCATCHER Create a coaster or suncatcher using a technique called glass fusing, where disparate pieces of glass are assembled and placed in a kiln to be heated to 1500 degrees, where the pieces fuse together. Learn flat glass basics like cutting colored sheet glass into different shapes to create your glass masterpiece.
KILNFORMING 2: TABLEWARE Create a glass plate or platter by assembling pieces of cut glass. Your finished design will be placed in the kiln, where the glass will be formed into a 3-dimensional shape using a ceramic mold of your choosing, in a kilnforming technique called slumping.
MOSAIC MADNESS Explore the fun and creative possibilities of mosaics! Possible designs include picture frames, house numbers, or your own unique design. You will learn the basics of mosaics using the direct method. All lessons begin with an introduction to flat shop tools, including glass clippers, running pliers and scoring knives. Supplies such as glass tiles, adhesive and grout will be provided. No prior mosaic or art experience is necessary.
GLASSBLOWING SATURDAY Glassblowing Saturday is an introductory lesson which offers participants a hands-on opportunity to try the glassblowing experience before committing to a longer format class. Teaching artists will instruct participants in traditional postures and basic techniques for controlling and shaping molten glass. Participants will take home their own glass creation.
GLASSBLOWING 1 Glassblowing 1 is a four-class workshop which offers participants the opportunity to explore glassblowing techniques in depth, and to develop individual and team skills in the hot shop. Teaching artists will instruct participants in traditional postures and basic techniques for controlling and shaping molten glass. Each participant will have the chance to make multiple pieces of work.
GLASSBLOWING 2 Glassblowing 2 is a four-class workshop which offers participants the opportunity to expand upon skills and techniques learned in Glassblowing 1. Teaching artists will guide participants in refining movement and deepening their understanding of the form in order to achieve desired results. Participants choose between making multiple pieces of work, or to focus on a singular piece.
THE ART OF BEADMAKING 1 This class introduces participants to the art of beadmaking using a torch. Basic techniques will be demonstrated. Participants will create their own decorative beads to take home.
THE ART OF BEADMAKING 2 Expanding on our introductory class, participants will learn surface design techniques and more advanced shaping to create their own unique glass beads.
