SUMMER YOUTH CAMPS
GlassRoots offers one and two-week summer camp programs for kids ages 10 and up. Summer camps run from June 25th to August 10th, 2018. Click here for specific camp dates and to register online: http://www.glassroots.org/take-a-class.html!
Beadmaking: Molten Magic! Experience the magic of molten glass! GlassRoots staff will guide you through development of designs for beads and jewelry while introducing basic art and design concepts. Through exercises and demonstrations that build your skills, you’ll learn how to make basic bead shapes (round, cylinder, cone), and learn about the history and science of glass. (Did you know that a pair of beads made from Nassarius snail shells - approximately 100,000 years old - are thought to be the earliest known examples of jewelry!) Ages 10-18; no experience necessary.
Creating with Flat Glass: Warm and Cold During this one-week session, explore various techniques of flat glass art. Often called "warm glass", you’ll learn the science and process of fusing, slumping and kiln casting glass. After an introduction to the kilns, create a "bas" or low relief tile in a glass kiln casting project; a multi-step project using clay, plaster mold making, and flower pot casting. Be prepared to be a bit messy! You’ll also learn to cut and shape flat glass in a slumping and fusing project, where pieces range from small coaster sets to 12" bowls, leaving with beautiful finished pieces! Ages 10-18; no experience necessary.
Glassblowing: Education. Exploration. Innovation. The art of glass blowing originated in the Middle East about 2000 years ago, and in many ways, the tools and glass-blowing technique used today are the same ones used thousands of years ago. You can be part of this rich history as you experience the wonder of hot glass worked in a furnace. In this class, you’ll learn basic traditional postures, techniques, and forms of blown glass as you work collaboratively with your classmates. You’ll review principles of design, art history and the history of the glass studio art movement, and be awed by the science of glass and glass art, especially the physics, chemistry and engineering involved! This program will encourage you to experiment and innovate with the material, and challenge your creative self. Ages 14 to 18. Choose from beginner or intermediate classes.
*NEW OFFERING* The Glass Volcano Experience In this camp teachers use molten glass to demonstrate the science and magic of a volcanic eruption! Activities will include working with fire and glass to simulate lava behavior by creating “Pele’s tears”, which will be turned into beautiful pendants you can proudly wear home. You’ll also learn about obsidian, or “volcanic glass”, which we’ll smash in order to create and observe the ripple pattern found in volcanic rocks – AND -- we’ll simulate lava flow using 2000 degree molten glass to destroy a paper village. Ages 10-18; no experience necessary.
