GlassRoots is excited to announce an expanded Youth Entrepreneurial Spirit (YES) Program in 2022-23!
Program Information: Winter/Spring Semester 2023 Program Dates: Wednesdays, January 18- May 17, 2023 Time: Estimated start 3:00- 4pm ( based on school times) - 6:00 pm Held at GlassRoots, 10 Bleeker Street, Newark, NJ
Youth Entrepreneurial Spirit (YES) is a unique art and entrepreneurship program designed exclusively for high school students. Artmaking – glassblowing, fusing and flamework – is the catalyst to teach students the fundamentals of business development and management. Once a week for three months, students from schools throughout the region gather to hone their creative thinking and problem-solving skills in our studios. This program is open to all area high school students.
For more than 15 years, YES has provided in-depth, practical, hands-on lessons in entrepreneurship, including the skills necessary to maintain a creative business. In the 2022-23 years, we are excited to partner with professional artists, designers, and fabricators from New Jersey and New York. Our faculty is new, but our goals remain the same, to inspire youth to dream big, learn new creative skills, envision a craft business from modeling to marketing, and work collaboratively with new friends and fellow young artist-entrepreneurs.
YES students will:
Learn basic business concepts and structures.
Receive hands-on training in glassblowing and other glass-making skills.
Discover opportunities for creative entrepreneurial skills and career avenues.
Become familiar with budgeting, including business licensing costs, start-up expenses, and fabrication expenses.
Learn marketing strategies and related expenses.
Students may have opportunities to sell their products in GlassRoots’ online store!
Program Requirements: Students must be currently enrolled in high school (grades 9-12) in order to participate in YES. There are no academic requirements to apply.
Students must commit to attending the sessions and participating consistently. Inability to attend the program regularly can result in suspension from the program.
This is an onsite class and students must be able to get to the studio located at 10 Bleeker St, Newark, NJ.
The YES program will be taught in person following all current state and local public health safety guidelines, including building occupancy, social distancing, and mask-wearing.
Cost: YES is open to all high school students. The program is free to all Newark students. Scholarship information is available upon request for other students. The cost is $800 for the semester. Funding for this program is provided by Celia Lipton Farris and Victor W. Farris Home Community Fund, S. About GlassRoots Since its founding in 2001, GlassRoots has engaged tens of thousands of Greater Newark-area youth and young adults with its programs, including school-based and public classes and workshops, field trips, summer camps, fellowships, internships, events, and commissions. While our students learn the process of glassmaking, they also develop social-emotional learning skills like creative problem-solving, teamwork, discipline, and resilience needed to work safely with 2,200-degree fire and molten glass. They gain hands-on experience in chemistry, physics, and math. They become young entrepreneurs as they develop and market their products. They join a vibrant community in which they grow stronger each time they forge glass and experience the power of their own creativity.
